Artem Dolgopyat won Israel’s first Olympic gymnastics medal when he won gold in the men’s individual floor exercise over a tiebreaker.
This is only the second gold the Israelis have won in an Olympic competition after Gal Fridman won gold in windsurfing in Athens in 2004.
Dolgopyat, a two-time world championship silver medalist in the same event, was tied with Spaniard Rayderley Zapata with 14.933 points, but won on Sunday due to the higher difficulty of his routine.
“Artem, you champion made history today,” Israeli President Isaac Herzog tweeted.
“Israel is proud of you.”
China’s Xiao Ruoteng won bronze for his third Tokyo Games medal, with Russian favorite Nikita Nagornyy settling for seventh after landing a triple pike out of bounds.
Brazilian Rebeca Andrade won gold in the women’s vault final after 2016 champion Simone Biles skipped the event to protect her sanity after struggling in the air during training.
Andrade, 22, who took silver in the all-around last week, recorded 15.083 to easily take the win ahead of Biles’ US teammate Mykayla Skinner, while South Korea’s Yeo Seo Jeong took bronze.
The men’s pommel horse and women’s uneven bars final, also without Biles, will take place later on Sunday evening.
