SINGAPORE – Low-intensity physical activity will be allowed in public and private gyms and fitness studios from Saturday, May 8, Sport Singapore (SportSG) announced in an updated notice on Friday evening.
This follows the government’s announcement of stricter Covid-19 measures on Tuesday, and the advice of the National Sports Agency for Sport and Physical Activities on Thursday to curb the transmission of Covid-19 within from the community.
The new measures included the closure of indoor gyms and indoor fitness facilities such as yoga and pilates studios from May 8 to 30.
They applied to those operated by commercial enterprises, national sports associations, country clubs, golf clubs, private apartments, condominiums, and charities.
Indoor sports facilities such as badminton halls, basketball courts and climbing halls will remain open as the SportSG Directive only applies to “indoor enclosed and confined spaces where participants are likely to engage in to intense activities without a mask ”.
However, SportSG said on Friday that low-risk activities can continue under strict safety management measures during this heightened alert period, with all participants and instructors required to wear masks at all times. These low risk activities were defined as those that are low intensity and “where all participants and instructors wear masks at all times, and where there is no sharing of common equipment”. In an updated notice published on Saturday, SportSG also added that no indoor fitness training center “will be permitted to offer strength, strength or resistance training in any form, and / or to provide equipment for such training, as these are associated with strenuous activities “. .

Culture, Community and Youth Minister Edwin Tong said the changes were the result of discussions with business owners and professionals in the sports and fitness industry, including Singapore Fitness Alliance, the National Instructors and Coaches Association, FitnessSG and the NMP Mark Chay.

The update came on a day when the Singapore Sports Hub said it would tighten safety management measures at all of its venues and facilities.
The Sports Hub Gym, Sports Hub Fitness Studio and Kids Water Playground at Splash-N-Surf will be closed May 8-30.
A spokesperson for Sports Hub added that at all gyms and fitness programs, pass validity dates will be extended and classes will be rescheduled.
While most venues and facilities will remain open and activities will continue, they will be limited to a maximum of five people per group, he added. Outdoor classes will not have more than 30 people per session.
Located on a 35ha site in Kallang, the Sports Hub includes facilities such as the National Stadium, OCBC Arena and OCBC Aquatic Center, Water Sports Center and 100Plus Promenade.

Water sports center
- Limited to 50 people per zone at all times and all to stay in the respective zones

- Each group should be 3m apart and each client should be 2m apart from each other
- All kayaks and canoes available for two hour rentals only
- The maximum capacity of a 12 crew dragon boat is four rowers, a helmsman and a trainer (optional)
- The coxswain and coach must wear a face shield
Community sports facilities
- Limited number of participants for hard courts, beach volleyball courts, giant chess, bowling greens, children’s play areas, exercise and fitness stations and the skate park
Sports Hub measurements will be observed in conjunction with existing safety management measures such as temperature controls, use of masks at all times except during heavy exercise and maintaining a minimum distance of 3m with others during exercise.
SafeEntry-only recording on TraceTogether is also encouraged at Sports Hub, as SafeEntry recording with Singpass and phone camera will no longer be supported after May 17th.
